代表作 Signature Work
2011年、ひとつの美術館が「ファッションとアートの関係」を問う展覧会のために、一着のドレスを依頼しました。それが、マイケル・バルナートの代表作となります。
In 2011, a museum staging an exhibition about the relationship between fashion and art commissioned a dress. It became Michael Barnaart’s signature work.
2011年、彼はゲメーンテミュージアム・デン・ハーグ（現クンストミュージアム・デン・ハーグ／デン・ハーグ市立美術館）から、企画展 「Fashion ♥ Art: An Affair」 のためのカプセルコレクションを依頼されました。展覧会そのものが、ファッションとアートの関係を主題とするものでした。
依頼を受けて制作したのは、それぞれ一点の芸術作品に着想を得た6着のドレスです。
In 2011 he was invited by the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag — now the Kunstmuseum Den Haag — to design a capsule collection for the exhibition Fashion ♥ Art: An Affair, which was itself about the relationship between fashion and art. He made six dresses, each inspired by a single work of art.
同館は世界最大のモンドリアン・コレクションを所蔵していることで知られています。だから僕は、自分なりのモンドリアンドレスを作らなければならないと感じました。
Since the museum is known for having the largest collection of Mondrian paintings in the world, I felt I had to create my own version of the Mondrian dress.
Michael Barnaartこの問いには、本人が正面から答えています。
こう思われるかもしれません。それは1965年のイヴ・サン=ローランの、あの象徴的なモンドリアンドレスの模倣ではないのか、と。
Now, you might think: isn’t that a copy of Yves Saint Laurent’s iconic Mondrian dress from 1965?
Michael Barnaart2011年当時、イヴ・サン=ローランというブランドは、むしろ古びたイメージを帯びていました。デザイナー本人の没後数年が経ち、あのドレスも人々の記憶から薄れていた。店舗は閉じられ、業界関係者からは「本当にイヴ・サン=ローランと結び付けられたいのか」と問われたほどでした。
そして事実として、モンドリアンに着想を得たドレスは、イヴ・サン=ローランの前にも後にも存在します。モンドリアンに触発されたオランダ人デザイナーは数多く、最初のモンドリアンドレスは、1965年版の21年前に遡ります。
In 2011 the Yves Saint Laurent brand had acquired a rather dated image. Mondrian dresses existed both before and after Yves Saint Laurent, and the first of them dates back twenty-one years earlier.
単純な線と原色は、まさにオランダデザインの伝統の一部です。
The simple lines and primary colours are very much part of the Dutch design tradition.
Michael Barnaartモンドリアンはオランダが生んだ画家であり、その造形言語はオランダのデザインそのものです。オランダ人のデザイナーがモンドリアンに向かうことは、借用ではなく、自分の系譜に触れることでした。
結果はこうでした。
結局、誰も僕のモンドリアンドレスをイヴ・サン=ローランと結び付けませんでした。
In the end, it turned out that nobody associated my Mondrian dress with Yves Saint Laurent.
Michael Barnaart2011年、6着のドレスは1週間で完売しました。2013年、美術館は再びこのドレスを求めます。
その2年のあいだに、イヴ・サン=ローランを描いた映画が複数公開され、ブランドには新しいデザイナーが加わり、その生涯と遺産にふたたび光が当たっていました。
皮肉なことに2013年、僕はイヴ・サン=ローランの成功と再評価に便乗しようとしていると批判されました。けれどそれは、2011年にあれほど好意的に迎えられたのと、文字どおり同じドレスでした。批判した人たちは、この一、二年でイヴ・サン=ローランを知ったばかりで、僕自身のデザインが何を意味するはずなのかを、僕に向かって語っていたのです。
Ironically, in 2013 I was criticised for supposedly trying to capitalise on the success and renewed appreciation of Yves Saint Laurent. But it was literally the same dress that had been so well received in 2011.
Michael Barnaartそして彼は、この経験をこう受け止めています。
人の記憶がいかに短いか、そして、デザインを取り巻く文脈がいかに速く変わりうるかを、教えられました。
It taught me something about how short people’s memories can be, and how quickly the context around a design can change.
Michael Barnaart服は、何ひとつ変わっていませんでした。変わったのは、それを見る世界のほうです。
「なぜファッションは毎シーズン変わらなければいけないのか」という彼の問いは、こうした経験の上に立っています。流行が意味を書き換えてしまうなら、書き換えられないものをつくればいい。その答えとして生まれたのが、ブローチでした。
The dress had not changed at all. What changed was the world looking at it. His question — why must fashion change every season? — rests on experiences like this one.
このほかミラノ、ブラジルでも展示されています。学術の領域でも、スタンフォード大学名誉教授 Nancy J. Troy らの文献で、「現代のモンドリアンドレス」として国際的に論じられています。
It has also been shown in Milan and Brazil. In academic literature it has been recognised internationally as the Mondrian dress of our time, for example in publications by Nancy J. Troy, Professor Emerita at Stanford University.
